Статус родителя предоставляет право принимать любые решения, касающиеся воспитания ребенка, а также решения по всем важным аспектам, влияющим на образование ребенка, выбор религии и т.д. Хотя статус родителя на Кипре предоставляет родителю определенные права, законом четко предусматривается обязанность родителя осуществлять свои родительские права в наилучших интересах ребенка.
На мать изначально возлагается ответственность родителя в силу факта рождения ею ребенка. На отца автоматически возлагается ответственность родителя, если он женат на матери ребенка на момент рождения или сразу после рождения ребенка.
